In April 2016, President Jokowi inaugurated Wasior Port in Wondamba Bay, West Papua. Wasior Port is part of the government’s sea toll road transportation program, to connect Tanjung Priok in Jakarta and Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, East Java, to other major ports in Indonesia’s eastern provinces.

The President explained that good connectivity between cities and regions with better modes of transportation would significantly cut price disparity. As part of this program, the government also has put a great deal of resources into improving the performance of seaports to cut down dwelling times for cargo vessels.

Trade Minister Thomas Lembong said the sea toll program has succeeded to cut prices in Papua. Four months after the launch, he saw decline in the price of several products in Papua, especially in Fak-Fak and Kaimana, citing a 6 percents decline in the price of steel price, a 21 percent decline in the price of cooking oil, and a 35 percent price decline for chicken, reported by the Jakarta Post.

This program is expected to contribute in strengthening the overall competitiveness of the economy. Superb seaport performance will unleash the country’s vast economic potential, because shipping lines and business in general will benefit from improved logistics and reduced costs of supply chains.
