Infrastructure development is an important thing that must always be considered in every region. Indonesian President, Joko Widodo reduces the inequality of development in the region of Papua by doing rapid infrastructure development. Development in Papua is certainly not an easy thing. It takes hard work and some good strategies for development to take place in challenging areas of Papua. Geographical conditions and the security disturbance by separatist groups, poses a formidable challenge to the implementation of the development. Still, it does not stop the government from building Papua into a more advanced region. The Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing spent 7,6 trillion rupiah in 2017 for Papua. The fund does not include the Special Allocation Fund, which reached 2,18 trillion rupiah.
In the field of road construction, Trans Papua Road is targeted to be fully connected in 2018-2019. In the field of water resources, the Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing rehabilitates several irrigation areas. Development in the housing sector is also underway, such as repairing uninhabitable homes, through Rumah Swadaya program. In addition, in improving the quality of settlements, the handling of slum areas is done through the program Kota Tanpa Kumuh (KOTAKU) which reach 41 urban villages in Sorong and West Monokwari.
Another strategic step of the government which is very important for the welfare of Papua is by enacting one price Fuel. Currently there are 9 areas in Papua that have the same fuel price as Java. The previous price of premium and diesel between Rp 30,000 – 100,000, but now the price of premium becomes Rp 6,450/litter, and diesel Rp 5,150/litter.
This significantly fair, equitable and transparent development approach makes Papua gradually more secure. Opening up isolation and alleviating poverty by reduce the price disparity, and with this Trans Papua highway Papuan people can enjoy logistic supply with reasonable price. These things help improve the welfare of the people in Papua. President Joko Widodo’s policy of developing Papua has been supported by Indonesia National Army that helped secure the situation in Papua from the separatist groups, as well as the hard work of the local government of Papua to continue to catch up with other provinces.
